Credit reporting presents issues that are critical for domestic violence survivors’ short-and long-term financial independence, as well as their physical safety.  This workshop will explore credit reporting issues for survivors, including 1) what is a credit report and credit score, 2) obtaining and understanding a credit report, 3) what to do if there are errors or outdated information, 4) whether the abuser can obtain the survivor’s credit report, 5) identity theft by the abuser, and 6) credit reporting issues when the survivor takes on a new identity.  The session will include an overview of credit reporting laws and practical tips for advocates.

Faculty for this session will be Chi Chi Wu, an attorney with the National Consumer Law Center and the principal author of NCLC’s Fair Credit Reporting (6th ed. 2006 and Supp.).

This training is open to attorneys and advocates who represent survivors.  Prior experience with credit reporting issues for survivors is not a prerequisite.

This webinar is sponsored by the Consumer Rights for Domestic Violence Survivors' Initiative, a partnership of the National Consumer Law Center, the Center for Survivor Agency and Justice, the National Network to End Domestic Violence, and the National Association of Consumer Advocates, funded by the Office of Victims of Crime, US Department of Justice.
