This training is open to attorneys and advocates who have little or no experience with tax representation.

Economic justice is a central component in the ability of domestic violence survivors to achieve financial independence. In particular, tax issues stemming from the perpetrators’ economic abuse presents a myriad of challenges for domestic violence advocates. This workshop will discuss four issues impacting domestic violence survivors:  1) filing status as it pertains to tax credits, exemptions, and joint liabilities; 2) the "race to file first" and its impact on return acceptance and refund issuance; 3) protecting and authorizing disclosure of taxpayer information; and 4) the innocent spouse defense to collection actions.

The session will address how each of these issues affects the journey of a tax return, the refunds generated by a tax return, and the resolution of debts that may have arisen from prior returns.  Faculty for this session will include Susan Morgenstern, an attorney with the Legal Aid Society of Cleveland, and Mary Gillum, an attorney with the Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands.

This webinar is sponsored by the National Consumer Law Center,  Center for Survivor Agency and Justice, the National Network to End Domestic Violence, and the National Association of Consumer Advocates with the grant Consumer Rights for Domestic Violence Survivors Initiative (CRDVSI).

There is no charge for this webinar.
