The Center for Survivor Agency and Justice, formerly known as LAPTOP, is dedicated to enhancing advocacy for survivors of oppression-based intimate partner violence. We strive to meet this goal by cultivating a community of attorneys and advocates who are skilled in survivor-centered advocacy and capable of meeting the entire spectrum of civil legal assistance needs of survivors through their own advocacy and in partnership with others.

Since the year 2000, CSAJ has served as a technical assistance provider for the network of over 200 LAV grantees across the nation. CSAJ staff and expert consultants work closely with attorneys and advocates to provide legal and advocacy problem-solving assistance tailored to address individual cases as well as more broadly defined systemic advocacy needs. The Center for Survivor Agency and Justice staff, consultants, and national partners collaborate with attorneys and advocates to facilitate critical thinking, networking, strategic advocacy and innovative practices.

The Center for Survivor Agency and Justice accomplishes this goal through:

• Individualized technical assistance: Staff and consultants provide individualized legal and advocacy technical assistance. CSAJ connects attorneys and advocates with one another, staff, partners, and expert consultants to create a network of rich, critical, and creative advocacy among civil legal assistance providers.

• Listserv: CSAJ maintains a moderated listserv strictly for LAV grantees, staff and partners, through which grantees may pose questions pertaining to individual cases, programmatic challenges, and general legal representation/advocacy concerns.

• Teleconferences: CSAJ hosts bi-monthly two-hour teleconferences. Past teleconferences have addressed issues such as workplace violence, interstate custody, credit repair, custody evaluators, military issues, parental kidnapping, and supervised visitation.

• National Institutes: Staff and partners design and present conferences on important civil legal assistance issues. The one and two day institutes take place across the country, enabling LAV grantees to network, while learning more about various aspects of civil legal representation for survivors.

• Quarterly Newsletter: CSAJ distributes a quarterly newsletter, which includes articles on current legal issues, case law updates, survivor stories, and upcoming CSAJ events.

• Other Products: CSAJ also produces articles, essays, toolkits, and model legal and advocacy documents on current issues in the field.

• On-Site Consultation: The Center for Survivor Agency and Justice is available to perform on-site technical assistance to LAV grantees’ programs as requested by the Office on Violence Against Women.

The Center for Survivor Agency and Justice seeks to facilitate the critical work that attorneys and advocates perform on behalf of survivors. Our goal is to enhance the capacity of attorneys and advocates across the nation through partnership and networking.
